July 22nd saw the annual Royal Navy Outhwaite trophy contested at North Foreland Short course.
Entering its 12th year, the trophy was first contested in 2010 and was in honour of the late WBro Peter Outhwaite who had served as Master of the lodge in 2008. Later it became a trophy to remember not only Peter, but also his father Jason who had served as master back in 1984 and a true father figure to many within the lodge.
On the day, the weather was kind, neither chilly nor too hot, but the sea breeze proved tricky as the scoring was not as low as it had been in previous years.
Overall, 26 players contested the day and top of the tree was Royal Navy’s own WBro Ian Tremelling who showed the rest of us how the game should be played and finally wrestled the Outhwaite trophy away from WBro Derek Rogers. Who, having won it for the last couple of years, now has an empty space on his mantlepiece.

On the day, we also enjoyed a few “firsts”. This year saw four lady golfers join us in the competition. Not only did Leigh Lowdon win the “Best Guest” Trophy, but she also scored a hole-in-one on the ninth hole. This was an achievement that many of the lodges regular golfers are still desperate to achieve.
Another first was two father / son teams which is a fitting reminder when we remember the name of the event and the Father and Son who gave their services to our Lodge, and their name to the Trophy.
We were also joined by members of other lodges which included Lewises’, Union lodge, Kingsgate lodge, Rutupiae in Sandwich and also a Lady Mason from Tolerance 139.
After the golf, we were joined by other guests for an informal dinner, usual raffle and presentation. The event raised £520 which will be donated to the Cornwallis East Kent Freemason’s Charity.
