Saturday 3rd March saw the latest instalment in the annual quiz between Royal Navy Lodge and v Old Ruymian lodge.
Becoming something of a grudge match and with Old Ruymian lodge not having ever lifted the current trophy, they appeared in huge numbers with the finest brains among them. Despite being outnumbered, the Royal Navy team still a number of fully intact teams, Specifically Team “Richer” and Team “Mills”. Surely we would claim both ends of the table?
Over 90 people attended and split onto 11 tables. There was barely room to move as we used every inch of available space.
Peter Rodd wrote the quiz but was unavoidably detained by a finding a last minute bargain ski holiday for he and his family. in his place was the amply talented Jim Mason, chairman of group 8 and ably assisted by his good lady Polly who took control of the scoring.
Rounds one and two went smoothly with the usual groans of “I knew that” as the answers were given. Then, scandal and infighting occurred as round three was announced as this was a picture round where you had to name 20 famous landmarks and a number of teams saw the opportunity to play their jokers.
Normality was resumed as Jim reread Peters instructions which stated that most rounds were 2 points for a correct answer except round 3 which was 1 point each.
Moving to the results, Royal Navy were left disappointed as Bro Scott Goudie and his team came home victorious. Team Mills were also left disappointed as they were beaten to the wooden spoon.
The usual raffle ensued where and with the entrance fee a huge £865 was raised to be split between the two lodges. For Royal Navy, this was to raise money for our ladies committee who assist in the support of our Widows, providing the Summer Strawberry Tea and their annual Christmas get-together and Christmas dinner. It is comforting to know that there is a support network there for our loved ones should we be called to the Great Architect and I am sure that you, like me, are grateful for the silent work that they do behind the scenes.
