We received a request for help from Hilderstone College who had been busy raising funds for a New Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to be located on their campus.
Royal Navy had recently enjoyed a presentation from Margate Ambulance Corp regarding the use of the many defibrillators that we now see in our area, and during this presentation it was made clear that such a unit should be deployed within 3 – 5 minutes of collapse in order to offer a significant chance of survival. As the next nearest public AED is some ten minutes away from the college, Hilderstone’s request was a cause that our Lodge was keen to support.
Having covered the £1,000 cost of the actual defibrillator, Hilderstone College found that this unit did not come with the secure box required to house it, and that they now needed a further £400 to make this purchase.
The members of Royal Navy voted to support Hilderstone College with a donation of £200 and then approached the Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons Charity to “match-fund” this donation which was duly granted.
The new defibrillator will serve the local community including the schools, church, public house and other businesses that are all within two minutes from the college and offers a potential lifeline to anyone within this radius.
We are delighted to present Hilderstone College with a cheque for the requested £400, and whilst we hope the Defibrillator is never called upon, it is reassuring to know that this facility is there should anyone ever have need of it.
